Canonical just announced its second Ubuntu phone of the year, an impressive feat considering how long the company struggled to get its first handset off the ground. The Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition offers upgraded specs and a bigger display.
The new handset packs a 5-inch 720p display with 380 cd/m2 maximum brightness, a quad-core processor from MediaTek, 16GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. It also offers a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel shooter up front, which is an improvement from the 8 megapixel one in the earlier device. The phone also features a dual flash and can handle 1080p recordings. The E5 supports up to two SIMs.
Canonical is already working on a truly convergent smartphone with BQ, the European company behind its recent handsets.
“We have devised the BQ-Canonical collaboration as a long term project,” said BQ CEO Alberto Méndez. “Our next objective, which we are already working on, is convergence. We firmly believe in Ubuntu and the philosophy behind it.”
The Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition is set to launch across Europe later this month for €199.90. You’ll be able to order one directly from BQ’s website, though it’s unclear if the device will get a global launch.
