Fatalities are the signature move in brawler Mortal Kombat, and video game players will soon lop off heads and rip out spines with swipes of a finger.
In an interview on the official PlayStation blog, creative director Ed Boon breaks down Mortal Kombat for the upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld launching this spring.
The most notable change for Vita release is the addition of touchscreen Fatalities, finishing moves players perform at the end of each match.
“For fatalities, you can “slash” the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality,” Boon tells the blog. “It makes some of the more difficult fatalities easier and it’s fun to slash at your screen to fire off a fatality. I was surprised by how engaging it is.”
Boon says other game modes will leverage the Vita’s capabilities, including motion controls, although he wouldn’t offer too many details.
“Imagine tilting your PS Vita and affecting gravity in the game, things like that,” he says.
