Nickelodeon and Paramount Television, the makers of the upcoming TV series remake of 2003 hit School of Rock, have taken out their guitars and plucked actor/comedian Tony Cavalero out of moderate obscurity to play Dewey Finn, the role made lovable by Jack Black in the film.
Cavalero, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and a main company member of legendary improv venue The Groundlings in Los Angeles, has appeared as a guest star on many sitcoms including “Modern Family,” “2 Broke Girls” and was a regular on the Glamour web series “The Single Life.”
“I am so honored to be part of the rad legacy that is ‘School of Rock,'” said Cavalero. “Jack Black is one of my biggest comedy influences and I am ready to shred!”
Set to air on Nickelodeon in early 2015, “School of Rock” will follow the adventures and misadventures of Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck rocker who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school as he teaches his eccentric, unconventional and overachieving students to play and love rock ‘n’ roll.
The straight-to-series, 13-episode order will be written by Jim and Steve Armogida, who will also serve as executive producers and show runners. The movie’s director Richard Linklater and producer Scott Rudin will executive produce the television series.
