Todd Phillips Is Rethinking The No Sequel Stance On Joker

Filmmaker Todd Phillips was fairly hard core that Joker was a one-off project with zero plans for a follow-up. The film’s star Joaquin Phoenix shared the same message before the film’s release.

Now with the film’s wild success, Phillips appears to be changing his tune about doing a followup film. In an interview with The LA Times, says he’s now open to doing a sequel though there will be very strict conditions beyond just an obvious bigger payday:

“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime’. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

The film has now cleared the $1 billion worldwide gross mark – the first R-rated movie in history to do so – and is the mix for major awards for this season.
