Tobias MenziesTobias Menzies is moving from one beloved fantasy franchise to another. After starring as Edmure Tully in “Game of Thrones,” Menzies has landed a dual role in Starz’s upcoming “Outlander” adaptation.

Starz announced that Menzies will play both Frank Randall, the 20th century husband of main character Claire Randall, and his 18th century ancestor English Army captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall. This will give Menzies a chance to stretch his acting muscles, as Frank is a good-hearted character while Black Jack is described as a “dark, violent man.”

Menzies’ role in “Outlander” won’t mean he’s out of “Game of Thrones.” Edmure was one of the few characters who wasn’t killed off during the Red Wedding, and though he’s likely being held captive by Walder Frey, chances are we’ll see him again.

Menzies is joining Sam Heughan in “Outlander,” who is playing the 18th century character Jamie Fraser. Thus far Claire’s role hasn’t been cast. “Battlestar Galactica” showrunner Ronald D. Moore is helming this new project. It’s slated to premiere on Starz in 2014.
