The saga of Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote continues with the long-gestating film scoring some wins and losses this week.
The good news is the legal trouble that the film has been having is over for now. THR reports that a Paris court has ruled in favor of the filmmakers and against the movie’s former producer Paulo Branco who sought an injunction to prevent the film’s Cannes Film Festival screening on May 19th.
The festival is now free to premiere the film in competition as the closing night film as planned. Additionally, Turbo Films has acquired Chinese rights for a wide release in that country later this year.
Now onto the bad news with Indiewire reporting that Amazon Studios has pulled out as the distributor of the film in North America and Canada – a decision made despite their own significant investment in the project.
Then comes word from Deadline which says Gilliam also apparently suffered a mild health alert and was hospitalized in London. Reports emerged that he had suffered a minor stroke, but those were false with his reps saying Gilliam is resting up and will be in Cannes next week in support of his film.
Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce lead the film which hasn’t yet set a release date.
