Sony Updates Tablet S to Support PS3 Controller

Sony has given its Tablet S a software update in Japan that brings with it support for the PS3 game controller. One of the key product differentiators in the Sony tablet product line is that they are the only Android devices that are currently PlayStation-certified. Presently, only 32-bit titles from the days of the original PlayStation console are available, but previously could only be played using the somewhat awkward virtual gamepad control scheme.

To help promote the availability of the new functionality, Sony is also offering tablet gamers a free download of an Ape Escape mini-game collection. Although both the Tablet S and the PS3 controller utilise Bluetooth technology, Sony has said that its USB-adapter cable, that is also used for connecting cameras and other devices, is necessary for the hook-up to work (at least in the first instance). Tablet P users, however, miss out on the new capability.

Sony already sells a docking cradle for the Tablet S that should come in useful for more serious retro gaming sessions.
