Sony Boosts Output Of 3D Camera Parts For Smartphones

Sony has boosted production of its 3D sensors to meet heavy demand from phone makers going into 2019, according to Bloomberg.

The sensors can be used for secure facial recognition, mid-air gesture recognition, object scanning and recognition, and even room mapping. Sony’s 3D sensor technology provides greater accuracy and distance (up to 5 meters) than competing technologies that use structured light or stereo vision. I

nstead, Sony’s sensors use a pulse of invisible laser light, paired with a camera-like sensor that measures the precise time that the light takes to reflect off surfaces, instantly providing a detailed 3D map.
