Skype today announced its Skype for iPhone application for iPhone and iPod touch is available on the App Store in Canada.   Now iPhone and iPod touch users in Canada can enjoy the same features those of us to the south have for about a year.

“We are delighted to bring the Skype for iPhone application to Canadian iPhone and iPod touch users as it opens up new ways for them to stay connected with family, friends and colleagues for free or minimal cost,” said Tom Yeung, Skype’s director of market development, Americas. “With more than 6 million downloads from the App Store so far, the Skype for iPhone application is one of our most popular mobile offerings so we’re delighted to say that Canadians can now also carry their Skype conversations with them wherever they go.”

Features of the Skype for iPhone

  • Free Skype-to-Skype calls from any Wi-Fi zone to other Skype users worldwide
  • Call landline or mobile phones using Skype’s great low rates from any Wi-Fi zone
  • Send/receive instant messages to/from individuals or groups via 3G, Wi-Fi or EDGE
  • Receive calls to a personal online number on Skype
  • See when Skype contacts are online/available to IM or talk
  • Call Forwarding
  • Voicemail retrieval
  • Low-cost SMS messaging (Send Only)

Voice Only with WI-Fi

The Skype for iPhone application requires a Wi-Fi connection to make free Skype-to-Skype calls or low-cost Skype calls to mobiles and landlines. Sorry no voice over 3G.   When on Wi-Fi you pay the same rates for cals as you would using the Mac or PC version.

IM works on 3G

The Skype for iPhone application uses Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE (based on the fastest connection available) to sign into Skype, update a contact list, maintain and update presence and send/receive instant messages (Text).   Skype recommends an unlimited data usage plan for using Skype over a mobile data connection to avoid being charged by a wireless service provider for 3G or EDGE mobile data usage.

Profile pictures of other users in a Skype Contacts list are also visible, making it easy to identify them. In addition, users can update their own Skype profile picture from within the Skype for iPhone application, either by choosing an existing image from a photo album on the device, or by using the iPhone camera to take a new photo.

Availability and Cost

The Skype for iPhone application is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch, or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.
