Shure kicked off the NAMM audio show by putting out a new mid-range, in-ear headphone set and two new DJ reference headphones. The SE215 occupies the new low range with single drivers in each ear while still retaining signature longevity traits like a detachable, Kevlar-backed cable that should resist breaks in the long term. Its sound is tuned to the low end with upgraded bass.
The SE215 doesn’t have an in-line mic or remote but can use an adapter. Versions will ship with either clear or black translucent casing and will make cost the key aspect, as it should cost just $99 on the street.
DJs and some audiophiles get the picks of two models. The SRH550DJ is intended more for nightclubs and personal use with a more durable design, 50mm drivers that emphasize bass and an over-the-ear design that more completely surrounds the ears. They should be portable with a collapsing headband.
The SRH940s are designed more as studio monitors with an emphasis on “tight” bass but also a clean high range. They too are collapsible but have a padded headband for longer listening periods.
Both DJ headphones come with quarter-inch adapters and travel cases but have a wide price split, with real-world prices expected to sit at $99 for the SRH550DJ and $299 for the SRH940.
All of the headphones should be available sometime in the spring.
