E-commerce platform Shopify has announced the launch of an iPad-based point-of-sale system. The system combines an iPad app and a card reader. Store owners can use the pair to take Visa, Mastercard, and American Express transactions, including partial, multiple, and deposit payments. Customers can opt for print or email receipts, although the former require connecting a separate printer. Shops can also connect peripherals like a cash drawer or a barcode scanner.

Some other features include the ability to link customers to orders for tracking purposes, and search through order histories to refund payments. Orders can also be tailored with notes, shipping addresses, and discounts. On the management side, businesses can monitor cash floats and daily totals, and add an unlimited number of clerks via a PIN system.

The Shopify POS app is a free download, but the card reader is $20, and Shopify’s service costs $49 per month, per POS, plus credit and transaction fees. A 14-day trial period is available for new clients.
