Seagate this morning pushed out four pro drives targeted at both enterprise users, servers and serious users, including a near record-setting SSD. The Pulsar.2 is claimed to be the first SSD using multi-level cell (MLC) in business and uses the denser storage to boost capacity, but without reducing its lifespan. It can hold as much as 800GB in its 2.5-inch form but can take as many as 15 petabytes of writes, or more than five years if its drive were completely rewritten 10 times every day.
Its companion, the Pulsar XT.2, caps off at 400GB but, through faster single-level cell (SLC) storage, is intended for areas where speed is more important than capacity. It can reach sustained, sequential read speeds of up to 360MB per second and write speeds of 300MB per second. Both it and the Pulsar.2 can work on up to a 6Gbps SATA interface.
Two 2,50inch rotating hard drives, the Savvio 15K.3 and 10K.5, cater to those who want traditional storage but still a level of speed. At 15,000RPM, the 15K.3 can keep transferring data at up to 202MB per second with capacities up to 300GB. The 10,000RPM 10K.5 is a balance with 168MB per second but as much as 900GB of space.
Full-size 3.5-inch drives are still served by the Constellation ES.2. It brings 3TB to Seagate’s high-end disks and spins at the usual 7,200RPM speed of most desktop drives, albeit with steps to improve reliability and tools to help recover data.
All of the Pulsars, Savvios and Constellations are shipping to system builders today. Later this spring they will be available as stand-alone drives at retail.
