Scosche Announces myTrek Pulse Monitor, Workout App for iPhone

Scosche has debuted a new fitness combination for iPhone and iPod Touch users, a hardware band to wear during workouts combined with a companion app called the Scosche myTrek to help users monitor their pulse, target training zone and calories burned, as well as runners’ speed, pace and distance. Past workouts can be stored, and the band uses Bluetooth to wirelessly transmit the data collected to the app up to 33 feet away.

The myTrek armband features two LEDs and a photo-sensor, using changes in the user’s blood pressure to accurately measure pulse. The band also features a built-in accelerometer to help measure heartbeat and calories burned.

Once paired with an iPhone or iPod Touch, users are prompted to download the accompanying free app, which lets users personalize their workouts — choosing the type of activity, target training zone and workout goals. A male or female voice can update the user’s progress in real time, letting them know if they have moved outside the target heart-rate zone or how close they are to accomplishing the goal.

The app features a built-in calendar where workout data can be stored and reviewed, and the system does not require that the user wear the iPhone or iPod Touch in order to work, and of course the iPod portion can also run in the background, letting users enjoy their music as they exercise. The armband can be used for up to five hours on a change, and comes with a micro-USB to USB cord to allow charging.

The Scosche myTrek includes small, medium and large armbands, and retails for $130. It is available now at Apple retail stores, the fitness chain 24 Hour Fitness (and both Scosche’s and 24 Hour Fitness’ websites) and is coming soon to Target stores, Apple’s online store and Verizon Wireless stores.
