Samsung Announces Isocell Camera Tech

Samsung today announced what it calls an Isocell imaging sensor for mobile devices.

The primary advantage of this new sensor is that it forms a physical barrier between neighboring pixels, in effect isolating each pixel from those surrounding it. According to Samsung, this lets each individual pixel collect more light while also cutting down on electrical crosstalk between pixels. The result produces images with more accurate color, more detail, and better dynamic range.

Further, the Isocell sensor permits for a wider light entry angle, which cuts down on the height of the sensor. Samsung believes the sensor is ideal for devices such as smartphones and tablets. The first Isocell sensor is an 8-megapixel imager with 1.12micron Isocell pixels.

It is currently sampling and will reach full production during the fourth quarter.
