Samsung on Tuesday unveiled the consumer version of the PM830 solid-state drive it unveiled just last week. Now just called the 830 series, the drive has the same 500MB per second peak speed and SATA 3.0 (6Gbps) bus but is packaged in a way that will let regular users drop it in as an upgrade. The 2.5-inch, mostly notebook-oriented drive is about twice as fast as what had been available before.

The drive is one of the first practical uses of denser 20 nanometer memory as well as of toggle DDR, which helps keep the speed up on higher capacity drives. Owners can lock an 830 drive down with 256-bit AES encryption.

Home users will get the same capacities that PC builders do, starting at 64GB and including 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB versions. Samsung hasn’t outlined prices for the drives but does expect them to reach stores and resellers in October.
