With his Independence Day: Resurgence in theaters now, director Roland Emmerich is already gearing up for another science fiction disaster tale. According to a story fromDeadline, Emmerich has signed on to helm Moonfall, based on an original script by himself, Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen. Kloser previously worked on the script to 2012 and has also maintained a creative partnership with Emmerich as a composer on the director’s last few projects.

Moonfall, likened in the initial report to a combination of 2012 and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, follows “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.”

This Moonfall is not to be confused with another currently in-development project by the same name, a science fiction script by David Weil that made the 2014 Blacklist. That Moonfall has been described as a murder mystery in the vein of Fargo, set at an Earth colony on the moon. Although it’s been some time since we last heard anything about that film, Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Noah) was reportedly interested in directing.

Emmerich and Kloser are also attached to produce Moonfall, which is said to be on the fast track for development.
