PS3 Slim Coming 9/1, Sony Slashes PS3 Price to $299

It’s a rumor no longer — Sony’s PS3 Slim   is real! So is the fabled PS3 price cut. Sony just did the deed at  its Gamescom press conference today in Germany.

The PS3 slim looks like a PS3 that went to fat camp.  Make that 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, about as tall, but thinner, with a matte finish along the top and glossy sides.  But it’s still full-featured with a Blu-ray drive, a 120GB hard disk, and DualShock3 controller in the box.    Oh yea, the price is $100 less.

The current 80GB PS3 had been selling for $400, though a few retailers slashed prices in recent days and fueled speculation a price drop was imminent. It’s not clear whether the PS3 slim actually replaces the existing model or not.

If you don’t care about thin crazy, the price of the current PS3 models have just dropped  across the board, meaning that as of tomorrow, you can buy an existing PS3 anywhere in the US for $299. Or  300 euros in Europe or 29980 yen in Japan.

The PS3 Thin will be at stores everywhere September 1.
