NEC Announces ‘Green’ 23-inch LED Monitor

NEC has introduced what it calls the “next generation” of desktop monitors, starting with the MultiSync EX231Wp-BK, a 23-inch LED backlit monitor capable of full HD (1920×1080) resolution using a PVA panel with high viewing angles (178 degrees both horizontally and vertically), a 3000:1 contrast ratio and featuring human and ambient light sensors to adjust the monitor’s brightness to save power along with other energy-efficiency features.

The company credits the LED backing with allowing the large monitor to use less power, radiate less heat, and use less packaging for the lighter-weight design. The monitor also utilizes recycled plastics in its design, uses no hazardous materials, and features touch-sensitive OSD controls directly in the ultra-thin bezel for users to manually adjust settings. The human and ambient-light sensors not only detect local lighting and compensate accordingly, they also detect the absence of the operator and dim to save power when the user isn’t there.

The monitor has full connectivity including both DisplayPort and DVI-I output as well as VGA and DVI-I inputs, making it useful as part of a multi-monitor setup — the monitor can display all three inputs on its own screen at the touch of a button. The unit also features a USB pass-through port. It includes a fully-adjustable quick-release stand, along with height, pivot, tilt and swivel adjustments.

The NEC MultiSync EX231Wp-BK ships with a USB and DVI cable, along with a 15-pin D-sub to DVI-A adapter. It carries a three-year warranty, and is expected to retail for $319.
