Warner Bros. Pictures and Mojang have reportedly found a likely star for the upcoming Minecraft movie. According to Variety, Steve Carrell is being eyed to headline the video game adaptation that is set to hit theaters May 24, 2019. Carell would presumably be lending his voice to the feature film, but the exact format that the Minecraft movie will take has yet to be full revealed.

IT’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator, writer and star Rob McElhenney is attached to direct. Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie) and Jill Messick (Mean Girls) are producing.

Carell is stranger to neither live action nor animated feature film fare. He famously voices Gru in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s popular Despicable Me franchise. In live action, Carell is an Academy Award nominee for his leading role in Foxcatcher. He was also recently part of the ensemble cast of Adam McKay‘s Oscar nominated The Big Short and starred earlier this year in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society. When it comes to the small screen, Carell is also well known for playing Dunder-Miflin Regional Manager Michael Scott on NBC‘s long running hit, The Office.

Minecraft, which has passed 100 million registered users, is officially described as follows:

Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.

It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.
