Matthew Vaughn knows most of you didn’t care for the critical and box office whipping boy that was Kick-Ass 2, explaining to Yahoo that he’s “not happily done with the franchise.”

“We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit-Girl and Big Daddy become Hit-Girl and Big Daddy,” he said. “If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and then we can go off and make ‘Kick-Ass 3.’ I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with ‘Kick-Ass.’”

This echoes statements Vaughn made a few months ago to JoBlo, where he stated that creator Mark Millar and he had already plotted Hit-Girl.

“We have to get the script done next. It’s so far out there, you have no idea,” Vaughn said, adding that a proposed Kick-Ass 3 would likely take place mostly in the far east, with a director like The Raid‘s Gareth Evans behind it and stars Aaron Taylor Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz back in the fold. It can also be surmised that the not-too-picky Nicolas Cage could once again sport the cape, cowl and Adam West voice as Big Daddy in a Hit-Girl prequel, although the no-longer pint-sized Moretz would most definitely have to be recast.

While it’s noble of Vaughn to not want the Kick-Ass saga going out taking one on the chin, it was a major uphill battle getting the second one made even after the goodwill and moderate box office success of the first one. It’s not impossible to continue a franchise with a degree of success even after a second chapter fails, as Vin Diesel proved with the respectable returns on Riddick.
