The MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 is intended specifically for the version called the “mid-2010” 15-inch MacBook Pro, which was released on April 13th of that year and were the first to incorporate the i5 and i7 processors. According to a technote, the problem affects machines produced between April 2010 and February 2011.
If the machine is running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.2), the problem can be resolved through the update. If the machine is running Snow Leopard (10.6.x), users must find a nearby Apple retail store or independent Apple Authorized Service Provider and take the machine in for servicing. The technician will perform a software diagnostic test to determine if the model meets requirements for the fix. Affected computers can be repaired for up to two years from the date of (registered) purchase even if they are out of warranty.
