The first version of Lync for Mac has been released to manufacturing, Microsoft reported today. The software is an enterprise-oriented conferencing tool, on a basic level offering Messenger-style instant messaging with configurable groups and status messages. Availability can be set manually or triggered using calendar data or login status.
More complex functions include a dialer for VoIP calls, and the ability to start a meeting from within either Lync or Outlook. These can incorporate audio and video communication, as well as desktop sharing to conduct presentations or simply illustrate an idea. Commands lets organizers moderate meetings as necessary.
To get Lync for free come this October, companies must have the latest version of Office for Mac in either Standard or volume-licensed editions. Lync can also be bought as part of its own volume license. Some functions may require Lync Server 2010 or Lync Online.
