Locate Your Lost or Stolen Mac with Phone Home

Digital Point has launched new app allows owners to find the location of stolen or lost Macs called Phone Home.

The Phone Home daemon is designed to run in the background unnoticed. Phone Home determines the physical location typically within a few miles by the IP address it’s using. If your computer is stolen, you can subpoena the Internet service provider to find out who exactly owns the IP address the computer was using.

If your computer has a camera on it you can choose to view images of who is using your computer. The website will hold onto IP addresses the computer has used for up to a year, while pictures are only stored for a month.

Price and Availability

Phone Home requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and is available as a free download.

When running the free version the app will collect all data and keep historical records, while allowing users to see a map displaying the general location of the computer. However, in order to access more detailed info such as the IP address or images, users will need to upgrade to a Premium membership on the website.   This means you can upgrade to premium membership after you need to locate your computer and you will have full access to your historical data/images. No need to pay to track before you need to know where it is.
