LiveJournal has announced the release of LiveJournal: The First Decade, a groundbreaking anthology that celebrates ten years of original content drawn from LiveJournal users around the world, featuring photos, comics, stories, memes, editorials, and graphic content. Published in honor of LiveJournal’s tenth anniversary, the book is being distributed by Blurb.com, the leader in on-demand publishing, and is available for sale in both soft cover and hardcover editions at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/867149.

Known as a destination for creative writers, artists, and eclectic thinkers, the anthology showcases a cross-section of talent from LiveJournal journals and communities, including:

  • Excerpts from OH NO THEY DIDN’T (aka ONTD), the largest and most popular community on LiveJournal, covering celebrity gossip, entertainment news, and the very best and worst in pop culture.
  • A chronicle of post-Katrina New Orleans from the journal of Poppy Z. Brite
  • Brilliant narratives, including an amazing reverie on a blind date
  • Photography from around the world, ranging from old-fashioned Polaroids from Russia and Singapore, to contemporary underwater photography
  • Mouthwatering recipes and images from Food_Porn, a community dedicated to demonstrating, among other things, that bacon improves everything

What began as a late night inspiration in the college dorm room of Brad Fitzpatrick in early 1999 has grown to nearly 25 million users worldwide, with journals and user communities focused on every conceivable hobby, political conviction, and esoteric topic.

“In 1999, I was simply messing around with some code in order to make it easier for me to update my personal Web site,” says Fitzpatrick. “It’s hard to believe that was ten years and more than 10 million journals ago.”

LiveJournal has set up a community dedicated the ten-year anniversary of the service. LJ users are encouraged to visit and comment at LJ_Turns10. The community is an opportunity for LJ users to comment on their favorite selections, ask why some of their other favorites didn’t make the cut, and engage with other LJ members.

“LiveJournal is a true trail-blazer in the world of blogging, user-generated content, and social media,” says Annelies van den Belt, CEO of SUP, parent company of LiveJournal. “We are honored to continue to shepherd LiveJournal’s growth and look forward to the next ten years
