JVC this morning unveiled a new camera aimed to gives its owners the best of moving and still photography. The GC-PX1, previously shown as just a concept at CES, can shoot 1080P video at frames per second, hitting the peak 36Mbps bandwidth quality of the AVCHD (H.264) spec. It nonetheless has a traditional camera grip and can snap 10.6-megapixel photos with full manual controls.
Both modes can take advantage of a 38.5-385mm equivalent (10X) f2.8-4.5 stabilized lens as well as the maximum ISO 6,400 light sensitivity. A three-inch tilting touchscreeen provides the central controls for both. JVC provided a slight edge to video as a special slow-motion mode will capture up to 300 frames per second by dropping down to VGA (640×480) resolution.
As shipped, the camera will have 32GB of flash storage built-in and will have an SDXC slot to take up to 128GB more storage using current card technology.
The camera will be a premium model when it arrives first in Japan and has been given an unofficially estimated price equal to $1,223 after including taxes. Most JVC cameras reach the US and carry lower prices, but no details for a US launch and pricing has been disclosed at this time.
