Id Software co-founder John Carmack has downplayed the potential profits attempting to develop apps for the Android platform, according to comments in an interview with NowGamer. The executive admits that his informal survey of Quakecon attendees showed a 50/50 split between Android and iOS users, however fewer Android owners claimed to have spent $20 on a mobile game for their smartphone.

“Every six months I’d take a look at the scope of the Android, and decide if it was time to start really looking at it,” Carmack said. “You’re just not making money in the Android space as you are in the iOS space.”

Aside from the profit gap, the gaming veteran also noted that “It’s just fun to develop on iOS.” Id even hired a person to be its “Android guy,” but the developer will likely get “stuck on iOS development.”

The company is currently previewing one of its latest titles, Rage, that will be launched on iOS alongside other platforms.
