TomTom has updated its app for iPhone to version 1.8, which now includes HD Traffic compatibility, providing drivers what the company says is the most accurate traffic reporting available, with traffic conditions for both major and secondary roads within the U.S., updated every two minutes. The update also brings multi-stop routes to the popular software, which turns GPS-enabled iPhones into full-blown navigation units.
The multiple-stop route feature now allows drivers to add up to five stop-off points for planned excursions, and the update also refreshes the maps in the app to the latest versions, which contain any recent changes in roads. The TomTom app works with the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3G and recent generations of the iPod Touch.
The program comes in several continental and regional versions around the world, all of which have had their maps updated and support multi-stop routes as of the new version. In North America, the app is available as a “U.S. and Mexico” version ($60) and U.S only version ($50), along with a “Canada and Alaska” version ($50).
The HD Traffic add-on is available as an in-app purchase for $20. Current TomTom Traffic subscribers will automatically be upgraded to the HD Traffic service for free. First-gen iPhone and iPod Touch users are cautioned not to upgrade to version 1.8, as it is incompatible with those models. Users of the older equipment must remain with version 1.7 or risk losing access to the app entirely.
