Intel announced on Tuesday with plans to open a new US fabrication plant. The Oregon factory should be ready in 2013 and will primarily produce chips for research and development as Intel advances its designs. The new fab should lead to about 800 to 1,000 new jobs.
The firm is also upgrading four plants in Arizona and Oregon to make shipping processors based on its upcoming 22 nanometer process. The first chips based on the new process should be Ivy Bridge, a refinement of the 32nm Sandy Bridge architecture. Ivy Bridge isn’t due until late 2011.
