LatitudeGoogle today announced that it will close its Latitude location-sharing service on August 9.

Latitude allows mobile device owners to check-in to venues and share their location with others who use the service. Google is retiring every facet of the service, including Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website.

Google has already removed Latitude from the latest version of Google Maps for Android and it will be removed from the other mobile apps in the coming days. Google plans to delete users’ friend lists, and users will no longer be able to see, access, or manage their Latitude account or friends. G

Google says that check-ins won’t go away entirely, however, as they are supported in Google+.
