Google News Update Brings GPS Aware News to the Android, iPhone

Posted by at 12:39 pm on May 13, 2011

´╗┐Google wrapped up the week with an update to Google News on mobile devices. A “news near you” addition uses the GPS on a smartphone to automatically tailor the news based on the phone’s location. The strategy doesn’t just look for the publication but scrapes the article itself to find location keywords nearest the owner.

Nearby news is treated as its own separate category and can be bumped up or down the news priority list. Like others, it can also be removed entirely for those who don’t care to see it.

The new page needs an Android phone or iPhone to work and is currently limited to the US English version of the page. Google hasn’t said when it expected the local news feature to propagate to other languages.
