Evernote Acquires Software Developer Skitch

Evernote, the online note-taking service, has acquired software developer Skitch. The company’s app, which currently is only for Macs, enables drawing and making annotations on screenshots. An Android compatible version has been announced, and is expected to be shipping shortly.

Skitch was an early partner with Evernote. Its product let Evernote subscribers add freehand comments and sketches to their note pages. Evernote’s CEO, Phil Libin, outlined big plans for putting the app into other markets, stating that the Mac-only nature was “going to change soon.” Lubin also sees tablets as an emerging opportunity.

Evernote has already taken steps to broaden the app’s appeal. Along with the acquisition the company announced that the app, which had been priced at $20, would now be available for free (Mac App Store).

Skitch was founded in 2010 by four partners spread across Australia and Norway. The company sees itself as being the ‘Swiss Army knife’ of visual communication.

Terms of the deal were not announced.
