Delta Airlines has expanded its onboard Wi-Fi offerings to include international flights. The Gogo-powered Inflight Internet Service will be added to more than 150 aircraft in Delta’s international fleet, including the Airbus 330 and the Boeing 777, 767, 757 and 747.
Currently, Delta has Gogo air-to-ground connections functioning on over 800 planes, 550 of which are US domestic mainland aircraft, with the service covering over 400,000 customers per day. Instead of depending on base-station connections, the international flights will be using Ku-band satellite signals from satellite communications providers. The expansion to international craft will bring the number of Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft in Delta’s worldwide fleet to approximately 1000 by 2015.
Earlier this year, Qualcomm proposed a new in-flight wireless network that would allow for 300Gbps speeds. The Next-Gen AG system would use 150 towers within the US, and has backing from numerous airlines, including Delta, as well as support from Gogo.
