DC Comics to Reunite Midnighter and Apollo for New Series

Midnighter and Apollo are returning to comics, and this time they’re doing so together. Announced via the New York Times, DC Comics is launching a “Midnighter & Apollo” six-issue limited series this October. The creative team behind the recent “Midnighter” ongoing series will be involved in the new book; series writer Steve Orlando is returning, and “Midnighter” artist ACO will provide covers for the series. Interior art will be handled by Fernando Blanco (“Batman Eternal”).

The series will reunite the two for the first time in years; their on-again/off-again relationship has been mostly off-again as of late. Apollo appeared sporadically in Orlando’s most recent “Midnighter” series, although the two were decidedly not a couple in that series. “They have a firmer idea of who they are, and they’ve become stronger and more confident together,” Orlando told the New York Times. “This is the World’s Finest Couple — kicking back and making each other better than they are on their own.”

Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the characters were originally introduced in 1998’s “Stormwatch” #4. They appeared in that book as well as “Stormwatch’s” follow-up, “The Authority,” both of which were published by WildStorm outside of the main DC Universe. Their adventures with that team, which saw their commitment to each other grow to include marriage and adopting a child, were reset when the characters were folded into the main DC continuity as a result of the New 52. In this new status quo, Midnighter received an ongoing series that ended in May 2016.

“Midnighter & Apollo” #1 from writer Steve Orlando, cover artist ACO and interior artist Fernando Blanco arrives in stores this October.
