jane-the-virgin1The CW’s comedy-drama Jane the Virgin opened to promising numbers on Monday, a night that saw continued solid numbers for Fox’s “Gotham” and CBS’ “Scorpion.” NBC won as usual among the Big Four in demos, as “The Voice” and “The Blacklist” both grew week to week.

According to preliminary “live plus same-day” estimates from Nielsen, the critically admired “Jane the Virgin” averaged a 0.6 rating/2 share in adults 18-49 and 1.6 million viewers overall, virtually matching its demo lead-in from “The Originals” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) and building on the second-year vampire drama in total viewers. “Jane” held its 18-49 and total-viewer audience in its second half-hour — always a good sign for a new show, especially one that’s offbeat.

While these aren’t great numbers, it’s worth remembering that CW has struggled on Mondays in recent years, so getting solid results with young shows that have the potential to grow is a good sign. “Jane the Virgin” gave the net its best Monday-at-9 performance in both 18-49 and women 18-49 (0.7/2) since December 2012 and its largest overall audience since February 2012.

And for the night, this marked CW’s best Monday in 18-49 in nearly two years (0.6), and its best in total viewers in nearly three years (1.5 million).
