Casting is now underway for CBS’ upcoming DC Comics series, “Supergirl,” with TheWrap reporting that Claire Holt, best known for playing Rebekah on “The Vampire Diaries” (and it’s spinoff, “The Originals”), is up for the title role.

Written and executive produced by “Arrow” and “The Flash” creator Greg Berlanti and “Chuck” and “No Ordinary Family” producer Ali Adler, “Supergirl” is said to focus on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. The show will follow her as she begins to use her superpowers, which she has kept hidden for much of her life on Earth.

In many iterations the cousin of the Man of Steel himself, “Supergirl” was previously adapted into a feature film starring Helen Slater in 1984. Laura Vandervoort later appeared as the character on The CW’s “Smallville.”

Holt’s other credits include the Australian mermaid children’s series “H20: Just Add Water” and NBC’s upcoming event series, “Aquarius,” which follows an investigation into Charles Manson in 1967 Los Angeles.

CBS gave “Supergirl” a full season order back in September, mirroring Fox’s plans for “Gotham” last year. Between the Batman-inspired show on FOX, “Constantine” on NBC, “Arrow” and “The Flash” on The CW, DC Entertainment will have a comic-based television series on every major network outside of the Disney-owned ABC (which airs “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”)

Sarah Shechter is also executive producing “Supergirl.”
