Child ID, First Official iOS App from the FBI

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a new free iOS app, Child ID. The title is meant to help with missing children cases by providing parents with quick access to identifying information. This entails photos, and details like height and weight, which are saved in a way that makes it easier to show to police officers or security guards.

A tab in the app is designed to simplify contacting proper authorities. Also provided are tips on keeping children safe, or what to do if one goes missing. Child ID is only designed for iPhones so far, but is a free download from the App Store and should run on any iOS device using the v4.2 firmware or better.

The app is notably the FBI’s first official release for iOS. Others FBI titles on iTunes, including even ones for the agency’s Most Wanted list, are unsanctioned creations by third parties. The FBI says it is planning to expand Child ID’s features during the next few months, for example adding more photo upload options. The software should also become available on “other types of mobile devices.”
