The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be divided, but audiences sure aren’t. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that current Captain America: Civil War tracking positions the film at a $175 million opening, of course with the potential for fluctuation as we get closer to the release date.
Should the film reach the $175 million mark, it will pass Iron Man 3 to have the fifth-highest grossing opening weekend of all time, just behind The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That opening total would also make give it the highest opening weekend of 2016, currently held by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at $166 million.
Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War will debut in theaters on May 6, 2016. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 27 minutes, making it the longest Marvel movie to date.
