Bluetooth SIG Targeting Increased Range and Speed for 2016

Bluetooth LogoThe Bluetooth Special Interest Group said it plans to update the short-range wireless standard moving into the year 2016 with new capabilities.

The tentpole features include improved speeds, extended range, and broader support for mesh networks. The Bluetooth SIG says the improvements will be particularly beneficial to the Internet of Things.

It is targeting a 2x jump in wireless data transmission speeds without impacting battery life and thinks Bluetooth can cover entire buildings through mesh networks.

The organization did not offer a timeline for meeting these goals, nor did it say how it will achieve them. The Bluetooth SIG said it will share more information down the road.
