Ryz Media have introduced an app called BlinQ for iOS devices that can work as either a stand-alone Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for finding out what’s on a user’s local TV stations, or — in conjunction with the company’s “Q” headset-jack-based infrared unit, can turn the device into a remote control. Users can not only find information about program times and details, but can communicated with friends or find a viewing party.
BlinQ uses location to update live information about programs that are on at the time, and also provides updates on what the user’s friends (who also use the service) are watching. The program will let viewers know when to catch the shows they want to watch, and can also help them discover new shows based on personal and peer preferences. The app has the unusual twist of ordering program ranked on popularlity rather than by the usual channel lineup.
When used in tandem with the company’s hardware infrared device called Q, the program can also act as a universal remote control, handling not just changing channels and volume but even controlling TV-connected infrared-compatible peripherals such as a DVD player or set-top box. The app also includes social aspects so that users can find out what shows others are watching, or what friends are watching. Within the app, viewers can post and read posts about the programs that are on, and can choose to create or join “virtual viewing parties” of groups of friends who watch and post about a particular program.
The BlinQ app is free from the iTunes App Store, and requires an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 3.0 or later. The Q accessory (seen above) is sold for $10 directly from the company.
