“Awkward,” the MTV comedy-drama that helped the teen-skewing network gain ground in scripted programming, has been renewed for a fifth — and final — season, Variety has learned.
The series, which is told from the point of view of star Ashley Rickards’ character Jenna and focuses on the often sarcastic, often angst-ridden lives of a pack of suburban teenagers, premiered in 2011. It was created by Lauren Iungerich, who left the series before its season four bow. Exec producers Mike Chessler and Chris Albergheni now serve as showrunners. The cast also includes Beau Mirchoff, Molly Tarlov, Jillian Rose Reed, Brett Davern, Nikki DeLoach, Desi Lydic, Greer Grammer and Mike Faiola.
The second half of the show’s fourth season currently airs at 10 p.m. Tuesdays on MTV.
