AT&T has filed with the FCC to buy bandwidth in Louisiana from Maxima International. The purchase of 700MHz spectrum could enable the wireless carrier to expand its LTE-based 4G network into Terrebonne, a parish about 40 miles southwest of New Orleans.
Initially, AT&T is planning to roll out its LTE service initially in five cities: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta and Chicago. At least ten or more metropolitan areas could be added in the second half of the year, potentially reaching 70 million people by the end of 2011.
Expanding its reach across the border from its home state of Texas into Louisiana is a logical next move for AT&T. Following AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile, procuring bandwidth is another means for the company to increase its wireless network coverage.
