AT&T has announced a new service offering global coverage for connected and machine-to-machine (M2M) devices. The service is built around a first of its kind SIM that can operate worldwide. Combined with AT&T’s service management platform, Control Center powered by Jasper Wireless, the new SIM gives connected and M2M device manufacturers the ability to manage wireless device deployment and operations in all regions of the world.

AT&T’s broadband network covers more than 200 countries with access to hundreds of carriers. AT&T claims the global coverage capability will help automate operations and reduce the total cost associated with globally connected consumer devices and M2M deployment. Connected and M2M devices are used in such diverse fields as transportation, automotive telematics, industrial equipment and health care.

The AT&T M2M Application Platform gives developers a secure environment to develop and deploy scalable M2M applications. The platform can link devices to applications over the Internet, by WiFi, satellite, or the AT&T network, according to specific project needs. The company says it has certified nearly 1,200 varieties of connected devices for use with its network.
