Apple Resumes Sale of Final Cut Studio by Phone Only

Apple has brought back Final Cut Studio, bowing to pressure from members of the pro video community who complained that the sudden discontinuation of the previous version made the transition to Final Cut X more difficult. MacRumors confirmed that the suite is again available at its previous price point ($999, $899 educational), but would only be made available through telephone sales, and not at either Apple retail stores or the online store.

The suite consists of Final Cut Pro 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 4, Color 1.5 and Compressor 3.5. Apple discontinued the Studio product when the Final Cut Pro X suite debuted. The newer version has met with mixed reviews because of the radical changes in interface and workflow, along with the loss of a number of features — most of which Apple has promised to re-implement in future updates.

Apple responded to a storm of initial criticism by encouraging users to think beyond their present workflow, arguing that the product embraces new technologies such as flash-based digital storage rather than tape-based systems. However, the company found itself forced to issue refunds to soothe some unhappy customers.

Though a number of editors have embraced the newer program, the consensus was that it was too much new technology too soon for professionals to transition smoothly from their existing setups — which often have to deal with “legacy” standards and equipment.

Users who would like to order the “legacy” Final Cut Studio can call to order part number MB642Z/A by calling Apple telesales at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
