Motorola may not yet be out of the woods with respect to an on-going patent dispute with Microsoft. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit today ruled that the U.S. International Trade Commission used faulty reasoning in a patent case brought against Motorola by Microsoft.

The appeals court says the ITC was correct in finding that Motorola did not infringe on three patents, but said it “erred” in determining that Motorola did not infringe on a fourth patent pertaining to graphical computer interfaces. The appeals court has asked the ITC to reconsider its evaluation of the fourth patent.
