Nokia signalled that it was getting close to its first Windows Phone hardware by quietly posting its first official software. App Highlights app (Zune link), a portal that curates Nokia’s picks for local and worldwide apps, has been posted to the store this week without the option of an actual download. It may be written specifically to support the Mango update as it will post news of updates on the home screen, relfecting Mango’s better support of home tiles.

The app’s availability suggests that Nokia fully expects to have its first Windows phones available before the end of the year and that it may be closer than some first thought. Most anticipate an unveiling at Nokia World in late October and a quick enough turnaround that the phone will be in stores within weeks.

Only one phone is expected so far and would be based on its Sea Ray prototype. Not much is known other than its strong resemblance to the N9. One Microsoft veteran was ousted for discussing the phone and gave away that it should have a good camera and fast performance but could use a larger screen. The N9 has a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen and an eight-megapixel camera
