Analysts Predict Apple to Lose All-In-One PC Lead to Lenovo

A new prediction from Digitimes Research has made the claim that Apple will cede the top spot in all-in-one desktops to Lenovo in 2012. The iMac would drop from an estimated 30 percent of the field in 2011 to 24.1 percent in 2012, just being overtaken as Lenovo hit 25 percent. The Taiwan firm editorialized and claimed that Apple only had “limited room” for hardware variety while Lenovo had more choices and prices, particularly for its home country of China.

The same prediction estimated that HP would climb to 18 percent of the space for similar reasons to Lenovo, although its indecisiveness and overall “lack of stability” made it difficult for the company to get more. Other PC builders faced a tougher time, however: combined, smaller contributors weren’t expected to get more than a third of the entire space.

Apple’s reduced dependency may have been partly intentional, since it was focusing more on the iPad and on notebooks, researchers said. The study omitted questions of what Apple would do to the iMac in 2012; the all-in-one last saw a major hardware revision in 2009, leaving the potential for a significant shakeup.

The entire all-in-one space would potentially get more important share overall and could be 10.5 percent of the PC world. Most of this would come out of a declining overall PC market, however, as the iPad and other tablets cut into sales.
