Ten days after Syfy cancelled its highly acclaimed space drama The Expanse after three seasons, Amazon Studios is in talks to revive the series which is one of CEO Jeff Bezos’ favorite properties.

Steven Strait and Shohreh Aghdashloo lead the series which is set in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system and is divided into three factions in a tepid Cold War state – the affluent Earthers, the militarised Mars, and the lower class miners on the Asteroid Belt. The discovery of a dangerous ‘protomolecule’ threatens to heat things up.

The Live Feed reports the streaming giant is near a deal to revive the space drama, though the deal is not closed as yet. Syfy had only first-run linear rights in the U.S. to The Expanse while Amazon Studios had streaming rights to the first three seasons of the show. Netflix has international rights to the series.

Bezos is a big fan of the book and was reportedly livid that the TV series went to Syfy, in fact that was one of the big reasons Bezos issued the demand that Amazon Studios change their focus for more big budget fare ala Game of Throne”.

Following the cancellation, the show’s producers Alcon Television Group, which fully financed and produced the series, planned to shop the space drama to other networks. The series now joins Amazon which is getting big into genre programming in the near future.
