Panasonic added a third Lumix model as part of its camera introductions on Tuesday. The TS3 replaces the ruggedized TS2 and gets a number of features tailored to outdoor shooting. Along with GPS positioning to geotag shots, it has an altimeter, barometer and compass to help navigate and get information for the final image.
The body itself is further hardened compared to the TS2 and can withstand complete immersion up to 40 feet, take drops of about 6.6 feet and resist temperatures as cold as 14F.
Software has been upgraded to add the same 3D photo mode as the ZS10. While not a true 3D camera, it can take 20 photos and overlap the two that could best create the stereoscopic effect. An Image Uploader app installed on the camera helps streamline uploading to Facebook and YouTube without having to use an intermediate tool.
Inside, the TS3 has a speed-boosted 12-megapixel CCD sensor that’s enough to record 1080i video in AVCHD (H.264) and minimizes the shutter lag to 0.005 seconds in ideal light. Better image stabilization on the 4.6X zoom lens and an improved full scene auto mode mark additional upgrades over the outbound camera.
Panasonic hasn’t disclosed pricing for the TS3 but expects shipments in March and price details roughly a few weeks before it ships.
