Wii U to Only Support One Wii U Controller

While Nintendo is being careful not to rule out the possibility down the line, the Wii U will one support one controller.  I guess that why there is a big U in the name. add this to no no Blu-ray or DVD playback.

It’s a confusing move for Nintendo, considering the Wii leans so heavily on its party games, such as Mario Party, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Wii Sports, the last of which does see players often taking turns, but features popular competitive games such as boxing and tennis. It’s even more troubling considering Nintendo isn’t exactly known for offering a robust play-over-online experience.

Let’s be clear, here: the Wii U will only support one Wii U controller. It could still — and most likely will — allow for multiple players using, say, Wii remotes, but they’ll essentially be getting a handicapped experience.

Apparently, the decision to support only one controller with one console is less about a technical problem and more about money.

From President Satoru Iwata:

“There’s a cost issue,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Japanese business site Diamond Online. According to Iwata, Nintendo aims to have the console and games support one Wii U Controller.”Technically, it is possible for the Wii U to support multiple Wii U Controllers,” Iwata said. However, this will result in a “considerable” price increase.

According to Iwata, “We’re not planning on asking our customers to buy multiple Wii U Controllers.”
