According to The Hollywood Reporter, USA Network has ordered a pilot based on IDW’s werewolf-centric comic book series “Brooklyn Animal Control,” which was created by writer J.T. Petty and artist Stephen Thompson in 2013.

The supernatural crime drama follows a secret subdivision of the NYPD that works to control the city’s lycanthrope population. City politics, immigrant communities and families divided are the themes that will run through the series as it explores the insular werewolf community Kveld-Ulf, along with the case officers responsible for keeping them in check.

“Fans of the comic book know that Brooklyn Animal Control is a thriller anchored inside the world of New York organized crime families,” said Jackie de Crinis, executive vp original programming. “At its core, it is a family drama, albeit an unconventional one.”

In a rare case of comic book creator taking the reigns of a show, Petty will pen the script for the “Brooklyn Animal Control” pilot. Longtime comic-to-film maven David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, Blade, “Constantine”) will executive produce alongside Petty and Circle of Confusion’s Rick Jacobs (“Spare Parts”) and David Alpert (“The Walking Dead”) as well as IDW Entertainment’s David Ozer and Ted Adams.

The drama is a co-production between Universal Cable Productions and IDW Entertainment.
